Objectives

The goal of the St John’s College case was to divert as much organic waste as possible from landfill sites for food waste produced by the St John’s College catering facility through the implementation of the Pulpmaster Organic Recycling System.

The objectives were:

1. To replace the existing wheelie bin system
2. To implement the Pulpmaster Food Waste Recycling System
3. To reduce the use of plastic bin liners
4. To reduce waste to landfill
5. To reduce OH&S risks
6. To reduce waste management costs
7. To enhance the environment

Results

Environmental & Social

The benefits of the Pulpmaster Organic Recycling System were to be seen in the following:

• a reduction in plastic bags to landfill
• a significant reduction of organic food waste to landfill
• the production of organic fertilizer produced from organic food waste
• reduced food waste transportation costs by replacing 25 x 240 L wheelie bins with the Pulpmaster system

Occupational Health & Safety

The benefits of the Pulpmaster Organic Recycling System were to be seen in the following:

• reduced back strain risk through the reduction in carrying heavy food waste bags to the wheelie bins
• reduced slip/fall risk through the reduced risk of spillage on the floors
• reduced vector attraction through improved hygiene and odour reduction in the back of house and outside waste storage facility
• the elimination of fruit fly activity from the back of house area

Financial

The benefits of the Pulpmaster Organic Recycling System were to be seen in the following:

• a reduction in wheelie bin servicing costs of more than 50%
• improved efficiency in the work place as staff used a centrally placed (kitchen) Pulpmaster system
